5 Questions With...Phangs
Phangs – real name Jake Germany – is a Nashville-based musician who also happens to be an A&W fan. Read on for our chat with Phangs to find out his favorite A&W menu item, his musical influences, and a surprising fact involving A Goofy Movie...
How did you get involved in the music industry?
I played music as a teenager, as a hobby, and then my friend asked me to play bass for his band on Warped Tour in 2008. It changed my life. I’ve pretty much been doing this ever since! Phangs, specifically, is only a little over a year old now and it’s been my favorite thing ever! I'm super lucky.
What is one song you feel best describes you?
Oh man…what a great question. I think it would be I 2 I from A Goofy Movie. That movie and song honestly sparked the desire to be apart of music, to any degree. The character, Powerline, was who really opened my eyes to pop music. Even though he was fictional, he was the combo of Michael Jackson and Prince for me before I really understood Michael Jackson or Prince as a child.
One piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
Don’t take yourself so seriously. I used to stress so hard about what people thought about me or my art. Phangs is the first time that I really committed to making something that truly represented me and it’s been the most fulfilling.
If you could have lunch with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
Michael Jackson, every time. Lunch, coffee, movie, handshake, anything. He’s forever the man.
The age-old question: When enjoying a Root Beer Float, do you use a spoon or a straw?
Oh I’m a combo guy, for sure. Spoon and then straw.
