5 Question With...Jodi Shepherd, VP of Finance and Human Resources

Jodi joined the A&W Restaurants team in 2012 as a Senior Accounting Manager. Today, Jodi serves as the VP of Finance and Human Resources, helping foster and support A&W's One Team culture. Read on to discover Jodi's favorite A&W menu item, the advice she would give to her younger self, and more.

Can you describe your role at A&W using just 3 words?

Stewardship, value creation.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I spent half of my childhood living on a thoroughbred horse farm where my father worked. By the time I was 8 years old I had helped foal (deliver) over a dozen horses. Did you know a horse can stand within an hour of being born? I also got to muck stalls for our own horses but that wasn’t as cool!

Favorite A&W menu item?

Papa Burger with Spicy Papa Sauce. The Spicy Papa Sauce gives our already tasty burger the perfect extra zing!

What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

Achievements and goals are great but it’s our close relationships that determine health and happiness. Everyone should watch Robert Waldinger’s TED Talk on Harvard’s Study of Adult Development. I wish I knew about it sooner.

If you could share a Root Beer Float with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

Mike Rowe, who is most notably known as the host of Dirty Jobs. I saw him speak at a conference and he is a powerful storyteller and a big activist for skilled tradesmen. I’d love to hear about the behind-the-scenes on his shows but also pick his brain about the mission and initiatives of his WORKS Foundation.
